Often referred to as a cool-climate, but in reality an intensely sunny region with cloudless, warm (even hot) days and cold nights - Alsace is a singularly unique region. Strongly influenced by both the French traditions arising from the other side of the Vosges mountains and the German heritage which directly borders it to the east, Alsace has a complicated history of making some of the most un-French-like wines in France!
Probably best known for its whites, Alsace also makes sparkling wine and red wine but the main focus will be on the intensely aromatic, ripe and powerful white wines which the region is famous for. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer instantly spring to mind as the holy trinity of noble whites from this region. Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois along with some Sylvaner and Chasselas also make their presence felt in some delicious bottles.
In this class, we will taste three flights of some of the iconic and benchmark wines of Alsace, honing in on site and varietal combinations with an eye on the impact of specific vintages. Join Stephen Wong MW on a journey to the sun-drenched world of aromatic white Alsace wine.
