Climate Change - Welcome To The New Normal

Join Taranaki Branch and Young Engineers for this presentation by Dr David Lowe, Adjunct Professor, Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University of Wellington.

The presentation will focus on the climate changes science and the huge input that will be required from the engineering and science community to adapt and mitigate these changes.

Dr David Lowe is an Adjunct Professor at the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Dave spent his early life in Taranaki and in 1970 he became the first person in NZ to measure increases in atmospheric CO2 working with Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California and the New Zealand DSIR. After completing a PhD in atmospheric chemistry at Cologne University, he worked at several scientific institutes in Germany, New Zealand and the USA on projects investigating the sources of atmospheric CO2 and methane.

Dave is one of two New Zealand lead authors on the United Nations IPCC 4th assessment report on climate change WG1. For ground breaking contribution to human knowledge on climate change science, contributors to this report were jointly awarded the 2007 Nobel peace prize.

He acted as New Zealand’s science coordinator with Germany from 2012 to 2018 promoting a wide variety of bilateral science and engineering projects. During his career as an atmospheric scientist, Dave has personally witnessed more than 30% growth in atmospheric CO2.
