The single vehicle accident on May 12, 2018, that took the life of Daryl Ainsley is a tragedy which will forever live in the memories of so many in Cromwell, Central Otago and beyond.

His death stole a son, father, brother, uncle, life partner, best mate, boss, neighbour and for members of Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway, a tireless president, tough competitor, friend and all-round good guy.

To commemorate the life and times of ‘Mr 110%’, arguably one of the mobile network’s best customers, Central Motor Speedway will again this season host a Daryl Ainsley Memorial Meeting.

But before Saturday, March 21’s huge day of racing in Sandflat Road where attractions include a big field of biff ’n bash stock cars and the final of the Southern Sprint Car Series not to mention pedal-power shearing competitions, Friday, March 20 is an open invitation get-together day with a focus on participating in many of Daryl’s favourite activities.

The start point is The Gate’s Forage Café where at 10.30 the day’s events will be further explained including the poker card challenge with the first card being handed out there and then. It’s then a case of bringing your own wheels or find the owner of a classic American car happy to have you ride along to Highlands Motorsport Park for go-kart racing and more. There are more places and poker cards between then and before the 1.30 departure for Gravelly Gully, Daryl’s favourite family camping spot a good few kms north of Pisa Moorings.

From early afternoon to late, Gravelly Gully is where it all happens with a full programme of fun and games that includes a hole-in-one golf challenge, pin the tail on ‘Dawsey’, kids treasure hunt, jet boat rides, target shoot, touch, food, music and cold drinks (BYOG). A courtesy bus will be laid on and campsites are available.

For more information about what’s happening on Friday, March 20 visit the website and click the March 20 panel on the home page. If it’s impossible to take all of Friday off, then make it the afternoon and get along to Gravelly Gully.
