To film enthusiasts city-wide.

This is our season-opening Gala night on 17 February with Federico Fellini's not-to-be-missed sizzling classic '"8 1/2", in which a troubled Italian filmmaker struggles with creative stasis and retreats into his thoughts, often wandering into fantastical territory.

The film won two 1964 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume. Acknowledged as an avant-garde film, it has become a highly influential classic. Liza Fazi of the Dante Alighieri Society will introduce the film, which runs for 138 minutes. It is an Italian/French production, in Italian with English subtitles and is PG rated.

Doors open early at 6.45pm (usually 7pm), so there's plenty of time for non-members to organise their membership, receive a free drink and nibbles and do some socialising.

The Canterbury Film Society meets every Monday night (with breaks for public holidays and the International Film Festival – 6 to 23 August) at 7.30pm at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Our 2020 season offers 37 events, including two film festivals. We have membership prices to suit every pocket, eg a Flexi-Pass costs $30 for three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date.

New members are warmly welcome and are asked to come earlier than 7.30pm to speak to our membership team. (Downloading a membership form from our website and filling it in before you come is helpful.) Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you.

For more information about our 2020 programme, to view the trailer and request text or email reminders about our weekly or special events, go to our website – link above.

CFS brochures may be uplifted from the Christchurch Art Gallery, city libraries, WEA, Lumière and Alice Cinemas, and Addington Coffee Co-op.

Let us take you further into film!
