Food Forest Course

Learn how food forests work – how they can be designed, planned and maintained, and the sort of plants that can be put into them to make the food forest look after itself after a few years and give you very little work for a lot of return in food nutrition.

The course covers:
- Why is a food forest a low maintenance food system for your garden
- The different plants and products you can grow
- Key features - 7 layers of a food forest
- Putting in plants for fertility and pest control - plant guilds
- How to analyse your garden site for the best placement of plants and trees
- Ground preparation, planning and maintenance
- Plant propagation so you can produce your own plants at no cost
- Timing of planting and designing the layers so you can do it in stages as you've got time
- Identifying site specific plants - what works for your region, soil, microclimate
- Learn to put your plan down on paper and complete a design

Lots of practical work during the weekend on creating soil, planting, propagation, pruning and creating an 'instant' food forest in 50 minutes!

The course is for anyone wanting to know more about or wanting to plant a food forest - no previous garden skills necessary.

The course is held on a one acre permaculture property in New Plymouth which has a 3-year old food forest, extensive permaculture gardens, a sub-tropical planting area, stream and 350 year old native bush.

The course tutor is Dee Turner who has been teaching permaculture for 17 years and was herself taught my Joe Polaischer and Geoff Lawton. She regularly teaches 20+ students a week on everything horticulture, permaculture and biodynamic. Her property and the courses she runs has regularly appeared in New Zealand Gardener, Kiwi Gardener and Organic New Zealand magazines.

Dee is also an organic auditor and travels around New Zealand looking at properties and soils and therefore can give advice on your plantings no matter what part of New Zealand... or the world you come from.

Accommodation is available at the property for those wanting to stay for the weekend. Cost of the course is $200 for an individual or $300 for 2 people learning together.
