“Get Connected, Be Connected, Stay Connected”
Speech-language Therapy Awareness Week, 7-13 September 2020

Whangarei communities are invited to acknowledge Speech-language Therapy during the annual Awareness Week at a public free film screening this September.

Likeminded groups and organisations have banded together to host this free film event on Tuesday 8 September 2020, 4 pm at the Cafler Suite, Forum North, Whangarei.

The film Certain Proof: A Question of Worth is a feature documentary about three children living with severe communication and physical disabilities, who struggle against the school system in an emotional battle to prove their worth. People need to be able to communicate to fulfil their social, educational, emotional and vocational potential. Everybody has the potential to communicate.

New Zealand Speech Language Therapists Association (NZSTA) support and raise awareness of the about 400,000 Kiwis with some form of communication and/ or swallowing impairment that may include an inability to speak or be easily heard as well as issues with processing spoken and written language.

The evening will kickstart off with the Northland Indian Association Inc (NIAI) Chair Ralph Correa and Whangarei District Council Mayor, Sheryl Mai proudly presenting donated Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to local organisation Kind Hands.

Kind Hands run a purpose-built cottage, offering respite care for children who are aged under 6 years, have a disability and/or are medically fragile and/or are technology dependent in Whangarei.
AAC systems have multiple components and may include any of the following: symbols, signs, gestures, some spoken words, a visual schedule, a core language board, and speech-generating devices. AAC enhances receptive language, reduces frustration and behaviour problems, empowers the user, facilitates social interactions, supports learning and cognitive skills, and increases overall enjoyment and engagement in life.

This event is proudly supported by New Zealand Speech Language Therapists Association (licence holder of film), Northland Indian Association Inc and the Whangarei District Council’s Disability and Positive Ageing Advisory Groups.

Indian tea and ethnic snacks will be provided. The film will have captions and contract tracing set-up. Those wishing to attend must register their interest by contacting the NIAI before 7 September 2020 by email contact@northlandindianassociation.com. This event will only go ahead under level 2 & 1 restrictions and has a limit to 40 seats with social distancing in mind.
