I AM

In loving memory of the late Dr Leopino Foliaki, I AM is a live production that uses various contemporary and traditional art forms to tell the story of a young Pasifika male’s experience with depression and anxiety.

Dedicated to those separated from their motu , “I AM” is a proclamation for our youth to recognise the strength in being indigenous especially in times of adversity.

It is our values, our culture and the learnings we take from our ancestors that allow us to stand firm and remain resilient in a world that is overwhelmingly chaotic.

In times such as these, it is crucial that young indigenous people are equipped with the right tools to express their emotions. “I AM” is therefore, a collaborative effort of multiple indigenous creative artists from AKL who recognise the need for new ways to have these important conversations.

Not only do these artists wish to highlight the power in creatively sharing our emotions, they want to show that it’s OK to not feel OK. You are not alone and your hurt does not define you. In fact, it makes you resilient and capable of pursuing all of your dreams.

Most importantly, YOU are the person who chooses the words that follow on from “I AM” — no one else.
