Come along to our free Japanese Film night!

This month we will show two NHK World Documentaries!

Living Ninja Legend - Masaaki Hatsumi
Ninjas are enduring, iconic figures of Japan. They were active about 500 years ago during the country’s Warring States period. And these days, they’re thought to be long gone. But centuries later, one ninja is still with us. 84-year-old Masaaki Hatsumi is a successor of the Togakure school.

He teaches a supreme form of self-defence to more than 100,000 students around the world, including FBI agents and army personnel. Hatsumi can easily fend of attacks from these tough disciples and make them unmovable using just one finger. What is the essence of his astonishing art? This program investigates the hidden power of this ninja master.

Kimono Revolution
Yoshimasa Takakura, a kimono shop owner from Fukuoka has launched an unprecedented project: to produce elaborate kimono representing every single one of the 206 countries and regions around the world. His goal? The 2020 Olympics… he’d like to see all the placard bearers wear the kimono at the Opening Ceremony. Takakura is fighting to save the declining kimono industry by calling on artisans from all around Japan to come together and create innovative designs. The program follows Takakura’s quest to bring new life to an old tradition.

Each documentary is 49 minutes long, in Japanese with English subtitles.
Free admission is based on a first-come, first-served basis, with a full theatre capacity of 60 people.

A short Japan video topics DVD will be shown from 5:15pm before the start of the feature film at 5:30pm.
