An annual event held on Saturday 1st Feb, 2020 the Kawhia Kai Festival brings together whanau, locals, visitors, holiday makers and tourists to celebrate authentic maori food & culture.
Set in the heart of Kawhia, Omimiti Park transformed into a food court with a selection of maori food from the land (kai whenua) and sea (kai moana) it’s the perfect place to try delicacies such as Koki (shark-liver pate), fermented corn and the ever popular hangi.
Only an hour & a half drive from Hamilton city, thousands descend on the harbourside settlement for the Kai festival day.
Festival goers are treated to all day entertainment from local musicians, bands & kapahaka groups along with stalls demonstrating traditional maori carving, weaving with various arts & crafts for sale.
