The Department of Conservation is holding dog aversion training at Goldsborough camp ground on Sunday 16th August.

The aversion training is to teach dogs to leave kiwi and weka. Training will be delivered by qualified dog aversion specialist Lynne Maguire (wild4evakiwi.com) and takes 15-20 minutes per dog. There are weka and a campsite rooster at the Goldsborough site.

Lynne uses a small electric shock to deter dogs from reacting to preserved kiwi or weka, nest material, live weka, campsite rooster. We will be using a long extendable lead to give dogs freedom to chase, but not catch any live birds.

Within a year of the initial training, dogs are invited back to test for learned avoidance. If they show an interest in the lure, they are re-trained and invited back for testing the following year. It can take multiple training sessions before a dog consistently demonstrates avoidance.

The cost is per dog. There are 15 places available. Payment can be made by cash on the day.

To sign up, email DOC Ranger Fiona Anderson on fanderson@doc.govt.nz or phone the Hokitika DOC office on 03 756 9100.

This event is part of Conservation Week 2020.
