Resilience and Reinvention.

A unique performance of classical and jazz music by leading Jewish European composers, Weinberg, Korngold, Toch, Rózsa, Waxman and Castelnuovo-Tedesco, all of whom escaped the Holocaust.

This concert is themed resilience and reinvention, as these composers reinvented themselves in Hollywood, where they wrote the music for some of the greatest blockbusters, and influenced film music forever.

The concert will be a multimedia experience, with visual excerpts from corresponding films and a jazz tribute to Blue Note Records, New York - jazz’s iconic label, co-founded by German-Jewish immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff.

This concert commemorates Kristallnacht and the beginning of the destruction of European Jewry and is dedicated to the music of these Hollywood composers.

Performers include Inbal Megiddo, Jian Liu, Jenny Wollerman, Martin Riseley, New Zealand String Quartet (Helene Pohl, Monique Lapins, Gillian Ansell and Rolf Gjelsten), Yury Gezentsvey, David Barnard, Dave Wilson, Callum Allardice, Phoebe Johnson and Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa.

Presented by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand in partnership with Te Kōki-the New Zealand School of Music - Victoria University of Wellington, and supported by the Public Trust Hall and the Adam Foundation. The Kristallnacht commemorative concert will take place in the elegant, modern and central, Public Trust Hall - the building having been extensively renovated, and generously sponsored for the concert, by building owners Maurice and Kaye Clark.
