Be inspired by a tour through the ‘Pūkana: moments in Māori performance’ exhibition, then join in a mau rākau (Māori martial art) workshop learning about Māori weaponry and combat stances.

Learn Māori martial arts
This mau rakau workshop is fun way for the whole family to engage in Māori martial arts in a respectful way and learn more about the philosophy behind this ancient art form.

No previous knowledge is required. Watch matua Whaitiri Poutawa demonstrate the routine with a taiaha and talk about the history and tikanga (Māori protocol) around the mau rākau.

Then it’s your turn to give it a go! No matter how young or old you are, everybody is welcome to join!

What to bring
Children need to be actively supervised by an adult. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. Rakau will be provided.
Be prepared to get hot!

About the presenter
Whaitiri Poutawa is an experienced mau rākau (Māori martial art) instructor who teaches school children and adults.
