Join Dr Roger Shand for a Nature Talk focusing on "Geomorphological change in the vicinity of the Whanganui River mouth: 1840–2020".

Colonial settlement of Whanganui was enabled initially by the navigability of the Whanganui River mouth and estuary. A wide range of river control works created during the late 19th and early 20th centuries aided subsequent development there.

In this talk, Dr Shand describes these features and the responses of the terrestrial, tidal and marine environments to them. He will also show how the present configurations of the lower river and adjacent coast bear the stamp of these works, and how they are the source of some current environmental issues.

This event is part of Conservation Week 2020.
