Dunedin Fringe

An original play by Dunedin playwright Isaac Martyn, centred around two male Otago University students exploring their conceptions of love, loyalty and presentation together.

A naturalistic and vulnerable exploration of Otago Univeristy's "Scarfie" lifestyle. We follow Billy, a 20 year old Dunedin resident non-student, leap into an obsession with tentative student Aaron. The two boys find solace in each other as they combat the expectations of the culture around them; with Billy's high school friend Sophie, and her partner Grayson, serving to enforce Scarfie life upon them. The play explores what art can be to a Scarfie, and what art can mean to a person in love.

This original script was developed as part of the Ōtepoti Theatre Lab 2019 Playwright Programme, by emerging Dunedin Playwright Isaac Martyn, with mentorship from Dunedin playwright, writer and director Duncan Sarkies. This will be its debut production.
