Have you ever wondered how rescuers try to save stranded whales, dolphins and orca?

Come along to meet Leonard, Project Jonah’s life-size inflatable training whale, as well as some local Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medics, as they demonstrate some of their skills and share their experiences.

Project Jonah is a New Zealand charity with volunteer Marine Mammal Medics all over the country who are trained to respond to marine mammal strandings along our coastline. Strandings can happen at any time of the year, and can involve a single animal, or hundreds, and members of the public often provide valuable assistance.

Join in as the Marine Mammal Medics explain and demonstrate how stranded marine mammals are cared for and refloated, and some of the challenges involved. You’ll learn what to do (and what not to do) if you are ever at a marine mammal stranding, and what equipment is used.

Suitable for all ages, although younger children will need adult supervision.
Please note this event will take place on the Anzac Lawn in front of the Library.

Part of Seaweek - Kaupapa Moana 2020.
