Last true spectacle in auto racing.

Watching a sprint car race in the 1970s, Formula 1 legend Jackie Stewart commented that ”It is the last true spectacle left in auto racing.”

Over forty years later, it's likely Sir Jackie would still be blown away by these V8 powered methanol fuelled 800 to 900 horsepower 'winged demons' as they roar and snarl, slip and slide on Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway’s 500-metre clay track. And the best news is that after the Hydraulink War of the Wings round on Wednesday, December 30, they’ll be back at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Good Friday, April 2 for the final of this well-supported South Island-based series.

For any person or a family who has never been to the speedway, sprint cars are the fastest, reaching around 160kph on the short straights between the four corners of Central Otago's speedway track in Cromwel. As well as the War of the Wings, sprint cars will be racing in the Sprint Car King of Cromwell series, with round 3 on January 1 and round 4 on January 9.

Further adding to reasons for heading to Cromwell and the community-owned speedway in Sandflat Road, Cromwell, is the stockcar class that will be crashing and smashing at the December 30, January 1 and January 9 meetings. These heavyweights are custom-built tuff for rough and tumble, and weighing in at 1500 kg with up to 4 litres of the motor up front, pack a loud, metal-crunching punch. But don’t worry, drivers are well protected.

Adding to metal mayhem at the January 9 meeting will be street stocks. The ‘bovver boys of speedway’ this class is based on big family saloons suitably strengthened for argy-bargy.
Other classes racing at all three meetings include open wheel six-shooters, youth mini stocks, productions, super saloons and saloons.

EFTPOS at the gate, food stalls, Mr Whippy and for early birds waiting for the gates to open at 2 pm (all three meetings), there's parking on the grass amphitheatre surrounding the track. There's also plenty of room for spreading out blankets to enjoy all the track action. See you there!
