Completed in 1876, the Old Government Buildings mark the establishment of the nation’s central government and in its heyday contained the entire public service. It's one of the great timber buildings of the world - and our first smoke-free workplace.

Back in 1908, the Treaty of Waitangi was discovered in the basement of the Government Buildings, looking like it had been nibbled by rats. Fortunately these days the Treaty is in excellent care at the National Library, and the Old Government Buildings are rat-free.

Visit the Old Government Buildings on Waitangi Day with free entry from 10am-4pm.
Guided tours ($5 per person) at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm.
