Te Uru

Join storyteller and orator Pīta Turei on the summit of Ōwairaka / Te Ahi Kā a Rakataura for the second in a series of oratory events that open up moments in time and place.

Rakataura, or Hape, is an ancestor of Te Kawerau a Maki whose travels weave their way through the history Te Ika-a-Māui. A notable tohunga, he arrived in Tāmaki with the help of a taniwha. Rakataura’s influence spread across Tāmaki, from Muriwai to Pirongia and Kawhia, from Te Aroha in Hauraki to Pureora in the central North Island. Standing on the summit of Ōwairaka / Te Ahi Kā a Rakataura, a history of the land and people can be told, one that anchors our cognisance of this place through observation and the sharing of the oral histories of Tāmaki Makaurau.
