Explore Wellington as it was
This special compilation features unique footage of Wellington — from the seat of Government to ‘the coolest little capital’. Comprising recently preserved material, this programme covers the first half of last century.
Rarely-seen footage
Specially included is rarely-seen footage from the 1940 Centennial celebrations in Rongotai and our very oldest film — scenes of soldiers at Newtown Park preparing to leave for the Second South African (Boer) War. Tour iconic sections of the city that have strong civic identities: Cuba St, Oriental Parade, Lambton Quay and the waterfront.
A must for Wellingtonians
Take this unique opportunity to reflect on the story of our city — where has it been and where will it go next. ‘Wellington As We Were’ is a must for Wellingtonians and everyone who recalls the city ‘as it was’.
Includes then and now
Also included is a fascinating ‘then and now’ comparison. We matched scenes from archival recordings with their locations in 2019.
See what’s changed and what remains.
