Term 2 classes start Thursday, 6 May, 2021.

An exciting new performance-focused class for young actors aged 17-19 who need a place to learn and to perform, who are passionate about theatre and all it involves. Join us and learn skills you will carry into future study and future careers.

Our weekly 2-hour classes are designed for young actors to work within a variety of theatre styles, scripts, and acting techniques as they prepare for each term’s performance. There are 10 drama classes per term plus the final weekend performance (you must be available on this day) directed by the class tutor and supported by the professional team from the Tim Bray Theatre Company. Specialist tutors will be invited to workshop with the students to deepen their understanding of their craft. If students show interest there will be opportunities to expand into stage management and other production tasks.

One scholarship in 2021 will be available for students enrolled in this class to apply for if they are continuing their studies in any area of the performing arts at a tertiary institution.

TERM 2 GUEST TUTOR: Carla Martell
Carla Martell is a director and choreographer working in theatre, dance and film. Her early training as designer and animator has formed the basis for her interest in the creation of cross-media work, often in unconventional settings and with large casts of performers. Carla has created several site-specific movement-theatre works such as ‘Insomnia,’ ‘Field Day,’ and the production of ‘Home Ground’, commissioned for the opening of the Auckland Performing Arts Centre (TAPAC). She has been involved in over ten productions with Massive Theatre Company, most recently co-directing ‘Babble’ for Auckland Arts Festival 2020. Other roles include assistant director on six NBR New Zealand Opera productions, creative director of Auckland Theatre Company’s site-specific production ‘Come Dancing’ and more recently, co-director of Touch Compass Dance Company’s devised dance theatre piece, ‘All the Way Home.’

Carla regularly tutors and directs Massive Nui Ensemble, Massive Company’s training programme for emerging artists. Carla has been worked with Massive Theatre Company as a choreographer, tutor and director since its early days as Maidment Youth Theatre, and has co-directed over seven productions including 'Up Close Out Loud' and 'The Brave.'
