A compilation of Shakespeare’s most memorable women standing up to the pressures of the worlds they inhabit. While Shakespeare’s women are caged, modern women are free to reflect and speak up about their experiences during the 2020 Covid Lock Down.

The Project/Background:
Skin Theatre has been on hiatus for four years. Our last two shows (The Book Club, 2016 and The Experiment, 2017) were completely devised, original pieces interspersed with the classic texts Medea and Romeo and Juliet. We love the challenge of bringing the old into the new. Co-Artistic Director of Skin Theatre, Kelly Harris, is passionate about Shakespeare and after a 4-year break we decided to go back to what we do best: Shakespeare and female roles. 2020 was rough for us. As a company we suffered from physical and mental health issues. We strongly felt that we could not ignore the recent pandemic and lockdown as this has defined our current lives. We have endeavoured to bring the old into the new once again, and just genuinely want to give some theatre back to the community that has embraced us for so many years.

Skin Theatre was formed because a group of artists in the Manawatu felt that there were not enough strong acting and leadership roles for women in theatre that either challenged or inspired them. Together with a variety of talented Manawatu artists, they have continued to bring challenging and entertaining theatre to Palmerston North.
