Wine Sentience

For our fist Whole Bunch Seminar of 2021, we are delighted to welcome Rod Easthope of Easthope Family Winegrowers and Olly Styles of Halcyon Days to the Wine Sentience Hub to discus the lighter side of Hawke’s Bay reds.

2015 marked the last year of the Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers roadshow titled Hot Red Hawke’s Bay. In the years since the reputation of full-bodied Hawke’s Bay reds has stuck. After all, under the guardianship of a benevolent climate and lengthy sunshine hours, it is the New Zealand region we most often look to when we crave power, structure, and lengthy cellaring potential.

In spite of blanketing expectations, there is an ever-growing group of winemakers creating red wines that do not quite conform to the rhetoric. Responding to changes of the palate as well as climate, there are more Hawke’s Bay reds to choose from that land on the palate with an amount of spring in their step. In some cases, the wines are being made from grape varieties that are not expected to be coaxed into mouth-coating, teeth-staining reds; grapes like Gamay. In other instances, decisions are being made in the winery to avoid heavy extraction and instead opt for lighter handling to result in fresh, lithe reds.

Regardless of the preferred style of red wine from Hawke’s Bay, both iterations are necessary to see the complete picture of the region in the year 2021. The increasing diversity of wine styles add nuance and completeness to what can often look monotonal from the surface. Through the lens of these wines, we can hope to catch a glimpse of the future for Hawke’s Bay reds.

Rod Easthope of Easthope Family Winegrowers and Olly Styles of Halcyon Days will be joining us on February 10 for a deep dive into what it means to create lighter reds in a region known for its blockbusters. This is a chance to hear from winemakers about the challenges they are facing currently as well as their hopes for the future. It is also an opportunity to taste a line-up composed completely of lighter-bodied Hawke’s Bay reds in the context of their peers. The complete line-up will be confirmed closer to the date.

As with all the instalments in our Whole Bunch Series, this will be a full room of 30 people. If you are member of the trade, please contact Caitlin Perlman at caitlin@winesentience.com about seats.
