Maria is a descendant of Waikato Maniapoto, Ngaati Kahungunu, Ngaati Porou and Ngaati Whakaue. She comes from a whaanau steeped in Te Ao Maaori the Maaori world especially te reo and traditional and contemporary Maaori performing arts.
