Te Whanganui-a-Tara - Join us to explore the city you love - Wellington!
Join us for the very first Jane Jacobs walk through Wellington, touching on urbanist themes around places you may be familiar with - come and see them anew through an urbanist lens, with interesting places and speakers en route!
Jane Jacobs was an inspiring and well-known urbanist who advocated for better places to live in New York in the 1950s/60s and fought against motorways and heritage demolition. She successfully led campaigns to retain vibrant inner city neighbourhoods. Worldwide, walks are held around her birthday each year to honour her perspectives.
Wellington has its share of great spaces and places, natural and built, enjoyed by Māori, European, Chinese and later settlers. Urban planning, topography and citizen campaigns have created the urban form we enjoy today.
