How do you take a start—a line drawing or a doodle—and turn it into a work of art? In this two-hour masterclass Judy Millar will examine the difference between spontaneous starts and finished works. The workshop will explore developing an automatic drawing into a work at scale.
Millar will look at the example of Hilma af Klint’s monumental and exuberantly colourful The Ten Largest (1907). These 3-metre-high paintings were ‘channelled’ from the spirit world and evolved first as line drawings. Yet the completed compositions contain many formal properties and artistic decisions. As Judy says, "It’s very hard to draw a circle up a ladder.” The workshop will explore counter-intuitive knowledge and processes.
Participants are limited. Booking is essential.
This event includes entry to Hilma af Klint: The Secret Paintings on the same day, 2pm-5pm.
