Back by popular demand, Ōkāreka Dance Company presents the internationally acclaimed, Mana Wahine. A strong and powerful work, celebrating the essence of women and female spirit.
First conceived in 2011, Mana Wahine has toured Aotearoa and the world and returns to Tāmaki Makaurau for three shows only at Q Theatre this January.
Mana Wahine tells the tale of Te Arawa ancestress, Te Aokapurangi, who single-handedly saved her people from slaughter. Te Aokapurangi’s clever-thinking, bravery and ability to prove her adversaries wrong, inspired choreographers Taiaroa Royal, Taane Mete, and Malia Johnston to create a collaborative work celebrating the essence of women.
Mana Wahine is steeped in tikanga (customs), haka (Māori dance themes) and music that is derived from our Māori whakapapa (genealogy).
Boasting original compositions by Victoria Kelly, fusing traditional Māori music with modern day instrumentation, alongside stunning lighting design from Vanda Karolczak, mesmerising AV by Rowan Pierce, and stunningly simple costuming from Elizabeth Whiting, the audience is elevated into the world of Mana Wahine.
This company of five female dancers takes the audience on a spellbinding journey, bringing the audience to the edge of their seats and holding their breath until the epic final moments.
