You can’t refute that powerhouse drummer/composer and bandleader Mark Lockett loves the music of iconic jazz innovator/saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Having included a number of Coleman tunes on Locketts CDs it no surprise that Lockett would draw on Coleman for inspiration to pen a suite of new compositions.
Written for a cordless quartet the tunes incorporated Lockett's experiences of covid lockdown and touches of experiences from living in New York City. Lockett often works with an arranger and chose saxophonist Lucien Johnson for this project. “I wanted the tunes to be both joyful while allowing musicians the freedom to improvise not bound by complex harmonies,” says Lockett.
For this tour, Lockett debuts a smoking new quartet comprising of an all-star cast of Lucien Johnson (saxophone), Oscar Laven (trumpet) and Umar Zakaria (bass).
