Whau the People

10 April – 13 June 2021

Join us at All Goods for the exhibition of Whau-based artist and mentor Max White with 'Works on Paper: from the mid-80s to mid-90s.

Max White studied art and teaching at the University of Auckland and at Auckland College of Education. In 1981 he became an art teacher at Mangere College, where he was employed until 1992. In 1993 he obtained an art teaching position at ATI (AUT).

The work in this show dates from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s.

Though there is some overlap, the labels, card suits and hearts were made earlier – during the 80s, while the work from the Greek mainly dates from the 90s.

Three of the Greek works were shown in two ATI (AUT) Art & Design staff shows, while the other work here have not previously been shown.

The prints from supporting artists date from Max's last years at Mangere College (from 1991 – 1992). They were produced by his year 13 students and use etching processes.

The student works on show are by Andrew De Silva, Axel Smith, Kaisa Ainiu, Kandida Witeri, Mona Adams, Murray Itiri, Tamatoa Iotua, Toni Gillbanks, Veronica Vaevae and Yazma Smith.

“Ko ia toku kaiako toi i nga ra o mua
He was my art teacher back in the days
He tino pai rawa atu ia, kāore he wareware au nga taonga i tuku iho ki ahau.
He is a really awesome person. I will never forget the treasures/knowledge he has handed down to me.
Toku nei whakaaro, he rangatira ia!
In my opinion, he is of chiefly status!
No reira, nga mihi maioha ki a ia, toku hoa pai mo ake tonu atu.
Therefore, I give my appreciation to him, my good friend forever.
Nāku iti nei,
Kandida Witeri.”

Viewing or dropping in outside of public open hours available upon request.
