Join Professor Pio for this HeritageTalk to hear her account of women's migration stories and their experiences finding their place in their new country.

In our woven universe, immigration stories have multi-coloured gleaming threads entwined with motifs of history, culture, work and gender. How do migrant women navigate their worlds? How is voice and silence enacted in the theatres of their lives? This HeritageTalk will focus on the lives of visible ethnic minority migrant women and their trajectories of migration and work, embossed with patriarchy, religion and transnational feminist psychology, in their quest to create wonderful meaningful lives for themselves and their families in our beautiful Aotearoa.

Professor Edwina Pio's biography
Fulbright alumna, Dr Edwina Pio is New Zealand’s first Professor of Diversity, and University Director of Diversity and elected Councillor on the governing body of the Auckland University of Technology.

Her research encompasses the intersections of work, ethnicity, indigenous studies, religion and pedagogy. A thought leader, recipient of a Duke of Edinburgh Fellowship, Royal Society New Zealand Te Rangi Hiroa medal, Judge for the New Zealand Diversity Awards, trustee of the national Religious Diversity Centre New Zealand, widely travelled and published, she is known for her praxis in action and rationally compassionate work on diversity and inclusion and its many facets in a volatile world.

Many aspects of Edwina’s life-worlds have been structured by the complexity of being a scholar of colour and a passionately engaged ethnic minority migrant woman educator.
