Another Joseph Clarkson Maddison design, this grand building was designed with weight and prominence to reflect that power of central government, which it originally housed. Architectural historian Jenny May will take you through one of the few remaining examples of Renaissance Revival in Christchurch, and let you in on how this building connected to a global battle of architectural styles in the nineteenth century, and how it is in conversation with architecture of the continent.
Jenny May is an architectural historian and heritage consultant who has been involved in heritage for some 30 years. She is currently involved in a number of projects including the reinstatement of Christ Church Cathedral and the Arts Centre of Christchurch. She received the ONZM in the 2007 New Year’s Honours for her work in heritage.
