Bring along your young-un's for a hilarious play about periods you wished you’d seen as a teenager! Swear-word-free, sex-talk-free, culturally and religiously friendly we’ve worked hard to make this show a belly of laughs, a bucket of truth, and a sigh of relief. Audiences can expect giant vulva pillows, a myriad of menstrual cups, and a tiny tampon puppet!

'period.' is a 50-minute educational comedy that follows Karla, a young girl, as she experiences her period for the very first time. It’s designed to help people, young and old, understand—and become comfortable talking about—periods, as well as to initiate discussions around period poverty, period shaming, and body awareness.

Described as the show “everyone, of any age and gender, deserves to see” (Theatreview), 'period.' is definitely not just for girls and was devised with the Ministry of Education’s Sexuality Education Guide 2015 and Hauora (taha tinana and taha hinengaro) in mind.

Videos of people sharing their personal stories and puppetry sequences offer a unique look into the world of periods, period shaming, and period poverty in Aotearoa New Zealand. We, at Ephemeral Theatre, understand not every woman bleeds and not all who bleed are women, which is why our interviews have included women, trans-men, and gender fluid and non-binary people.

In 2018, 'period.' won two Regional Theatre Awards; 'Best Performance in a Short Play' and 'Best Original Script and Solo Production' and actress Amy Atkins won 'Outstanding Female Performer' at Palmy Fringe Festival for her performance.
