Archaeologist Kevin Jones presents a talk on recent archaeology in Kapiti-Horowhenua at Paraparaumu Library, 9 Ivor Trask Place, Paraparaumu.

Recent investigations in these districts include the NZTA Roads of National Significance and the new Manawatu bridge(s), work by Transpower, local government initiatives including the Manawatu LIDAR survey and a host of smaller developments such as subdivisions.

Kevin will summarise current research on the earliest settlement of New Zealand, and will then review the new results about pre-European settlement, horticulture and storage pits, shellfish gathering and a host of new radiocarbon ages.

The recently discovered archaeological sites in Kapiti-Horowhenua are mainly from the latest era of settlement previous to the arrival of James Cook and they represent a period when populations were at their maximum.

Space is limited.
