Come along and celebrate our 10th Raetihi Gutbuster event with ‘out and back’ rides on the historic Pipiriki Raetihi Road in the Central Plateau. To commemorate this special year, we will be awarding medals to all competitors.
The 18k walk/run/bike event offers a good hill challenge with a steep 2km long climb prior to the Waipuna Rd turnaround point and then back to Raetihi. The bonus is a stunning view of the three mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Not quite a half marathon, but the hills will make it feel like one.
The 25k bike ride is all the way down to Pipiriki with a bus ride back. You will still have to navigate the infamous Waipuna hill, and a few more ups and downs, but you can enjoy the scenery knowing that mostly uphill 25k back, can be enjoyed in style on a bus.
The 50k riders are the hardcore who ride all the way down to Pipiriki, and all the way back up. Fastest time is approximately 1hr 45 minutes. Raetihi is at 525 metres above sea level, while Pipiriki is 89 metres.
Bring your ebike along if you want to power up some of the hills and take in the countryside.
The road is sealed, but there are still challenges. One-way bridges, one of which is wooden with bumpy planks. Narrow sharp corners, the odd goat.
The event will start and finish outside the Waimarino Museum where there will be food and produce stalls. Prize giving is around 2pm with all competitors receiving a special 10th anniversary medal and prizes from our popular prize table.
Preregistrations and late registration be held at the Waimarino Rural Fire Depot, 103 Seddon Street Raetihi, opening at 9.30am, Sunday 4th April, for competitors to collection numbers and goodie bags. A $10 late entry fee will apply.
