Miles Davis recorded the tracks subsequently compiled as “The Birth of the Cool” over a two year period (1949-1950), featuring arrangements by Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis. The recordings represent an interesting transitionary period in the history of jazz – the nine-piece band plays harmonies reminiscent of the Big Band era combined with fast paced melodies typical of the Bebop era. For this concert, Dunedin’s own Ralph Miller leads a band of local players to reproduce and expand upon these recordings, presenting for a local audiences an important document in the history of jazz with an improvisatory twist!

The Dunedin Jazz Club is a licensed venue that creates the atmosphere of a jazz club in a concert setting.
