Do you break out in a cold sweat at the thought of having to sing Happy Birthday or the National Anthem in public?

Singing for Non-Singers is a fun, friendly and judgement-free workshop for people who have always wanted to sing, but feel too inhibited to try.

Perhaps it started when someone in primary school made a teasing comment of “you’re tone deaf”, or a busy teacher told you to stand at the back of the choir and “just mouth the words”. No matter where that inner voice came from, the result is tens of thousands of people in New Zealand who have given up on making music because of a false belief.

It’s time to do something for yourself and change your relationship with your voice.

“Everyone has a beautiful voice you just need to learn how to use it!” - Jo Estill

Yes, tone deafness is a real medical condition – but it is much, much more rare than most people think. In the workshop, we demonstrate the difference between being tone-deaf and simply lacking confidence in matching pitch (which is a much more common and easily improved challenge).

We explore three key skillsets for singing without fear:

Hearing and matching pitch – so that you know you are singing in tune.

Vocal production – getting the sounds in your head out into the world, strategies for range, volume and tone.

Confidence and mindset – myth-busting, practice strategies and overcoming performance anxiety

All you need to bring are your questions and a positive attitude.

No one will be required to sing on their own, or be put in any kind of embarrassing or stressful situation. There will be an opportunity for a live workshop in front of the group for any volunteers who would like to take this opportunity at the end of the workshop, but this is completely voluntary.
