Celebrate the forthcoming, spectacular sculpture by contemporary artist Reuben Paterson (Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe and Tūhourangi) – a 10-metre-high crystal waka suspended vertically and casting a galaxy of stars over the Gallery’s forecourt pool.

Made of hundreds of iridescent crystals that illuminate the Gallery in rainbow refractions, Paterson says ‘the waka appears to venture skyward’ traversing a spectacular journey from Papatūānuku into the embrace of Ranginui’s open skies.

Admire the waka under the night sky while enjoying an inu (drink) and light kai, then sit down for a conversation in intimate setting between Reuben and Head of Curatorial & Learning Sarah Farrar. They will discuss the artist’s inspiration, process and meaning behind this stunning new commission. Refreshments are included.

Inu & kai 6.00pm
Talk 6.30pm
