The Forensic Biology Summer School and Dunedin Branch of the Forensic Science Society is pleased to announce a public seminar by Coroner Anna Tutton, Deputy Chief Coroner of New Zealand.

Anna Tutton is the Deputy Chief Coroner of New Zealand, having been appointed to that position in 2020 and to the role of coroner in 2015. Before her appointment, she was employed in a range of legal roles including manager of a legal team for New Zealand Police, Senior Legal Counsel at the Commerce Commission, Crown Prosecutor, Deputy National Director of the Institute of Professional Legal Studies and High Court Judges’ Clerk. She has also worked extensively in various Pacific jurisdictions, training staff of Police organisations, lay Magistrates and those involved in the coronial process.

In this talk, Coroner Tutton will discuss her fascinating role of Deputy Coroner in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the ways in which Coroners rely on various forms of Human Identification methods and resulting evidence from Disaster Victim Identification from mass fatality incidents. Coroner Tutton will further talk about coroners’ recommendations and comments, and the impact they can have in reducing the chances of future deaths occurring in similar circumstances.
