New Zealand’s mild temperatures make it an unusual place for so many native fern species. About 40% of our fern species aren’t found anywhere else in the world. There are around 200 species of ferns in New Zealand, they range from 10 metre high tree ferns to two centimetres long.
Maungatautari has an astonishing variety of ferns easily viewable on this tour. Your knowledgeable guide will provide you with interesting and unusual facts about our native ferns and help you identify the different species as you enjoy a walk through our protected forest on the slopes of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. You will see examples of tufted, creeping, climbing, perching and tree ferns.
