Following The Capital Band’s ‘energetic’ and ‘spirited’ performance in April, the second concert in their 2021 season takes place on the 19th June. The programme features Vaughan Williams's formidable second string quartet, written in 1944, which has been paired perfectly with poetry by the English poet Wilfred Owen. Owen fought in the First World War and he was killed in action in 1918 at the age of 25. Vaughan Williams also served in the war and his post-war musical style changed drastically after what he had experienced as a medical orderly in Salonika and France.

The Capital Band is an innovative and exciting group of younger semi-professional, amateur, and non-fulltime musicians and comprises current and former members of Orchestra Wellington, the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, the New Zealand School of Music, and various other ensembles in the greater Wellington region.

All of The Band’s concerts in their 2021 season will take place in the gorgeous Vogelmorn Hall in Wellington and - fair warning - each of the four gigs will be a little different in terms of process, seating (or lack of *), and lighting.

You can bring your own blankets, cushions, drinks, and friends and there will be free admittance, with koha entry for those of you who would like to support the Band financially. You are also able to help The Capital Band to become 'carbon neutral' in 2021 by gifting a native tree to the Band's registry at Trees that Count:

The programme will be as follows:

6.45pm Doors
7.30pm Hindemith Trauermusik
7:40pm Haydn Symphony No.45, “Farewell”
8.05pm Interval
8.25pm Vaughan Williams String Quartet No.2 in A minor

* There will be seats available for those that do not wish to stand or enjoy the floor. Please send an email to thecapitalband.wellington@gmail.com if you would like a seat reserved or any other assistance in attending the gig.
