The New Zealand Male Choir in Concert with the Rotorua District Choir.
The joy of singing in a choral setting is what brings the NZ Male Choir and Rotorua District choir together for an afternoon of music. The choirs will perform separately and together so you get to hear the widest variety of sound.
They will present music from modern shows to opera, from Negro spirituals to an old Irish air, from Sting to Handel.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear mixed choral singing at its best.
The NZ Male Choir is formed from auditioned members with choristers from Southland to Northland. They come from all walks of life and share the passion of quality singing and being part of the Choir family. The choir fosters and maintains an enthusiasm for male choral singing, singing pieces composed or arranged for male voices usually Tenor 1, Tenor 2, baritone and Bass. Most members also belong to other choirs or musical societies and are encouraged to continue these interests. A professional music team manage the musical quality and performance of the Choir, taking rehearsals and directing performances and vocal training. The Musical Director, Joe Christensen and Accompanist, Alex Wiltshire bring vast experience to their role. The Choir tours nationally and internationally with a tour of the South Island planned for 16 September to 3 October this year. Our website provides a good overview of how the choir operates. We are always keen to recruit new members. If you can hold a tune and read music at a basic level, are keen to improve your skill and most importantly enjoy being part of a great team, we invite you to join a rehearsal experience and make contact with the Secretary or talk to us after the concert.
The Rotorua District Choir was founded in October 1960 as the Royal Choral Society. Its first work was a Schubert mass conducted by the late Nick Carter and in 1962 the choir was renamed the Carter Chorale in his honour. In 1990 the name changed to Rotorua District Choir to encompass the larger surrounding areas members travel to choir practice each Tuesday night. We have had a number of distinguished conductors over the years and at present have three, Elizabeth Pilaar, Evelyn Falconer and Jess Bradley who continue to foster the wide and diverse range of music from Theatre to Classical and beyond. The choir normally perform three concerts a year.
