This year 'Toby and the Rest' have picked up eight National awards at the Tauranga and Wellington Jazz contests. Most outstanding Sax player (Toby Barrett) M.O. Bass Player (Tyler Diprose) M.O. Pianist (Lucas Kewell) M.O. jazz combo and M.O. original composition. They released their first album 'NEXT' earlier in the year and have played several big gigs in Auckland. They played the Nivara Lounge back in February one Sunday afternoon, the audience were blown away by their performance and demanded that they come back....well, here they are !! back with a solid set for a Thursday night at the Nivara lounge. They will be playing their own arrangements of classics from the 1950's right up to the latest from Joshua Redman, Tigran Hamasyan, and many of their own compositions. . "The communication between these young musicians and their connection with the audience make them stand out, filled with fun and skill, this is live music at its best" Auckland Review.
At a gig in Whangaporoa they were joined by the legendary Brian Smith (NZ Sax and Flute player) at another gig at the Piha RSA Caitlin Smith could not resist joining them for a few numbers. Their music is infectious and is on a level that is equal to that of musicians three times their age....Toby and the Rest are creating a definite sound for the future built on their respect for the past.
