Join Historians John Orchard and Robin Cox as they reveal the history of whaling in Marlborough. Hear the stories of the rugged whalers, explore the site of the oldest shore-based whaling station in the South Island, and visit the last Perano whaling station.

Booking and costs:
- Book by 21 February at Marlborough Museum (10 and 4 daily) by paying for each Marlborough Historical Society member, or for those who are not members of the society. However, society membership is only $20 per annum, with many other benefits. Payment must be provided in advance to secure a position for the trip.
- Provide contact details to Marlborough Museum (phone and/or email) to ensure good communication.

Trip details:
- The trip departs Beachcomber Launches Office at 9am. Expected return is 5 p.m.
- Utilise the parking area near the “Coathanger Bridge” in Picton and factor in at least half an hour to get parked and pay the parking fee prior to 9 a.m.
- Bring food and water aplenty for the day. Bring a cup for hot tea and coffee which will be provided.
- Bring appropriate clothing and sun protection suitable for the weather conditions.
- There are MDC toilets between the car park and Beachcomber. There are 2 toilets on the launch, but no toilets at the ashore whaling sites.
- The day trip will feature the following:
- Going ashore at the site of Te Awa-Iti / Tar White, the oldest shore based whaling station in the South Island.
- Going ashore at the site of the last Perano whaling station, which closed in 1964.
- A selection of whaling history books and photographs.
- A selection of whaling artifacts to handle.
- Viewing the whalers’ lookout, and Tipi Bay whaling stations from the launch.
- A compelling commentary bringing heritage alive.
