Our September Open Late is inspired by our latest show Brett Graham: Tai Moana Tai Tangata. This is the second iteration of the exhibition described as, ‘‘a cautionary tale about human endeavour in Aotearoa New Zealand", which first opened at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in 2020.
At 6pm, Dr. Peter Brunt, Art Historian, Reuben Friend, Director of Pataka Art + Museum, and Curator, Hanahiva Rose share their responses to Tai Moana Tai Tangata in a floor talk. All three have also written powerful responses to the Govett-Brewster show—Peter Brunt in Art New Zealand, Reuben Friend on The Pantograph Punch, and Hanahiva Rose for Art News.
Next, at 7.30pm, our panel takes on The Future of Monuments. In this lively and discursive session panelists Mark Stocker, Morgan Godfery, Rebecca Kiddle, Diana Burton, and Courtney Johnston, discuss possible futures for public monuments and memorials. Each panelist will present a short talk on a monument to preserve before collectively debating the wider implications of this topic. Chaired by Ben Schrader.
To close the evening listen to immersive live music from Percussionist Riki Gooch (Ngāi Tāhuhu, Ngāti Mahanga, Patuharakeke) and taonga pūoro practitioner Alistair Fraser (Pākehā). Gooch and Fraser’s album ‘Rangiatira’ is dediciated to the memory of their friend and fellow musician Eddie Tutaki. “Fraser’s wide array of taonga pūoro sounds – varying from blown flutes and other instruments made from shell, wood, stone and grasses – merges seamlessly with Gooch’s ever-imaginative percussion patterns and rhythms,” Songlines. This performance will take place in the Hancock Gallery near Brett Graham’s sculpture O’Pioneer.

6pm: Peter Brunt, Reuben Friend, and Hanahiva Rose respond to Brett Graham: Tai Moana Tai Tangata
7.30pm: The Future of Monuments panel discussion, chaired by Ben Schrader
8.45pm: Immersive music performance from Riki Gooch and Alistair Fraser
As always, our bar and galleries open at 5pm, there will be Tuatara beers, Seresin Estate wine, supper treats from Firebird food truck and sounds from our RadioActive DJ Don Luchito.
If we go to Alert Level 2, we will be able to present some—but not all—Open Late events, with hygiene measures and social distancing. We advise booking, in case there’s a shift in level. Stay tuned for updates.
