Wairarapa Film Festival is a celebration of local film and filmmakers. We could not feel prouder or happier about sharing the remarkable contributions offered by our celebrated filmmakers, including Rāmai Hayward (Ngāti Kahungunu), Barry Barclay (Ngāti Apa), Vincent Ward, and Jemaine Clement (Ngāti Kahungunu).
Our programme includes short and feature films, workshops, exhibitions, and guest appearances from a range of veteran and emerging filmmakers. Film directors will be at selected screenings to talk about the creative aspects of filmmaking and advise on how to access funding and build career pathways into the film industry.
Special guests will speak about the cultural, historical and aesthetic significance of films such as Vincent Ward’s Vigil (1984). Alfio Leotta will introduce this multi-award-winning film; the first New Zealand film to be selected to compete at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Lawrence Wharerau will share personal stories of his close friendship with Rāmai Hayward and pay homage to her celebrated career in the film industry. Graeme Tuckett will present his beautiful tribute to Barry Barclay and discuss the importance of indigenous storytelling. Neil Frances and Allan Honey will share their remarkable documentary story about the Featherston Military Camp and offer insights into what daily life was like for the soldiers. At the heart of these films are the stories that celebrate the connection between people and places, tangata and whenua.
For a touch of cinematic nostalgia, we have scheduled some short films to complement our features. Guest speakers will be present at a selection of these films and will talk about their entries into film festivals and competitions. We are proud to support our emerging talent.
A series of audio interviews with local filmmakers will be broadcast on Arrow FM 92.7 in the weeks leading up to the Festival. They are also available to listen to as podcasts via the official website.
