AKL Heritage Festival 2022: 50 years of heavy metal music at St Matthew-in-the-City
High above Auckland, the church of St Matthew-in-the-City bells ring out over the noise of the city.
Originally installed in 1905, they fell silent after World War II. They were refurbished in the late 1960s and reblessed and reinstalled in 1972.
This year marks 50 years of the St Matthew Society of Bellringers and continuous ringing.
Join us to learn about the people who made it possible, the taonga we hold and share with the city and the ancient art of bellringing (also known as campanology).
This open day (12 noon-3 pm after the morning church services) includes regular bellringing performances, and tours of the church and belfry.
Belfry tour (every 30 minutes) requires bookings, no booking needed for the rest of the event.
