This is a special event, open to to non-members with admission by donation/koha, and screened in co-operation with Institut Français and the Embassy of France. Members are invited to bring along friends, family members, colleagues etc. Non-ticketed; first come, first served so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Join the Canterbury Film Society for weekly screenings of top-quality films – arthouse, classic, cult, documentary, world cinema and more – on the big screen at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. We meet every Monday night at 7.30pm (6.30pm for two longer screenings this year), with breaks for public holidays.

Over nine months from February to October, our 2022 programme offers Ōtautahi film lovers a palette of 35 films and full membership provides access to all screenings – less than $4 per film!

We’ve made joining easy and there are membership prices to suit every pocket: choose one of our 12-month memberships (options for new/renewing, unwaged/65+/Film Guild members, high school and students), a half-year membership, or a $30 Flexi-Pass that gives access to any three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date. New members are warmly welcome and asked to come earlier than 7.30pm to speak to our membership team.

Our Society nurtures a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with food and drinks for purchase (cash only), guest introductions and opportunities to socialise. Doors open 30 minutes prior to film start time. Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you :)

We adhere to all government guidelines for our screenings. Please check our website for up-to-date details of the Covid-19 safety requirements. (Under the orange traffic-light setting there is no capacity limit and a vaccine pass is no longer required, however, venue management requires visitors to wear a mask.)

This screening is Pamela Green's documentary ’Be Natural: the Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché' (2019, 103 minutes, USA, M) followed by 'Guy-Blaché: 13 Short Films'.

Alice Guy-Blaché was a ground-breaking pioneer of silent cinema and developed the language and effects of narrative film. 'Be Natural' dives into the birth of motion pictures, and the extraordinary woman who was banished from history books.

The 50-minute showcase of 13 short silent films, made by Alice Guy-Blaché between 1898 and 1907, features slapstick comedy, social realism, historical epic, and fantasy.
