Our pets are a blessing, and they deserve to be blessed, too, for the love and joy they bring to our lives. An opportunity to bless your pet comes at 2 pm next Sunday when a unique service will be held beside the big yellow fountain outside Napier’s Waiapu Cathedral.

This Animal Blessing service commemorates the life of Saint Francis, the Italian mystic who founded the Franciscan Order in the early 1200s. St. Francis is one of the most well-known saints, recognised for his care of animals. This service is being held as close as possible to the official worldwide St. Francis’ Day, October 4th.

The short, informal service will include a welcome, prayers and readings and will have some fun elements too. For example, some people present may be dressed in animal onesies, and others may bring their teddy bears!

All the animals present will be blessed. Pet owners who are unsure if their furry or feathery friends can cope happily with an event such as this are welcome to bring a photo of their pet - these will also be blessed and every pet owner present will receive a certificate of attendance at the service. We look forward to welcoming you and your pets on Sunday!
