Opening event (with Morning Magpie)
”Around the Corner, Up the Street,” 24 June 2022, 5-7
RDS Gallery
6 Castle Street, Dunedin

On 24 June 2022, for the first time in Aotearoa | New Zealand, we celebrate Matariki as an official public holiday. This date coincides with the opening of our annual group exhibition at 6 Castle Street, featuring artists from our local community. Join us for this double celebration at RDS Gallery on 6 Castle Street from 5-7 (masks preferred), where you will find the work of eight local artists on display. During this time, drinks on us will be served at Morning Magpie, around the corner, up the street.

In keeping with the spirit of Matariki, RDS Gallery has teamed up with Morning Magpie (around the corner, on 46 Stuart Street), to find a more comfortable alternative to the traditional packed-elbow-to-elbow art gallery public reception. We will be handing out ”drink tickets” at the gallery to be redeemed at Morning Magpie, which has just expanded its seating and will be open in the evening, starting 24 June (7:30 am until late). One of the artists (Troy Butler) in our exhibition is co-owner of Morning Magpie and a long-standing supporter of local artists. Hanging works by Philip Frost, Anya Sinclair and Danny Brisbane on the walls is a Magpie tradition––so moving our celebration to this venue seems a natural solution.

Morning Magpie Café has seating indoors and outdoors, which minimises proximity (it is about three times the size now of RDS Gallery). Staff are vaccinated and will be masked. If you wish to continue celebrating after your free drink, you will be able to order food and beverages from Morning Magpie’s menu at its usual prices.

We at RDS Gallery and Morning Magpie Café hope you will join us for this special event. Come out Friday 24 June in support of our neighbourhood and the wonderful city of Ōtepoti | Dunedin––celebrate our new public holiday Matariki Day, which signals the coming of the Māori New Year.
