Formerly a family doctor, Fiona is an award-winning novelist and short-story writer who hung up her stethoscope in 2003 to pursue another long-held dream, to write. Her work has been published internationally.
Her second novel, The Last Time We Spoke, won the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel in NZ, 2017. It was also shortlisted for the New Zealand Heritage Award. Addressed to Greta, her third novel, launched Bateman Books’ fiction list and won the NZ Booklovers Award for Best Adult Fiction in 2021. The Doctor’s Wife is her fourth novel and is due to be released in October.
A number of Fiona’s short stories have also won awards, including ‘Madmen’, which won the Sunday Star Times Short Story Award 2018, and ‘A Breath, A Bunk, A Land, A Sky’, which was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2020 from over five thousand entries.
Fiona is active as a teacher of writing and a mentor to writers, speaking and writing about writing practice. She has appeared at both the Auckland Writers Festival and Bloody Scotland (in Stirling, Scotland).
