Kabalevsky: Cello Concerto No.1 in G minor (soloist: Damon Herlihy-O’Brien)
Dvorak: Symphony No.8

Wagner: The Mastersingers Overture
The warm and stately first theme of Wagner’s overture has been described as “one of the most delicious musical appetizers in all of opera. Immediately, it brings the listener into a world of good will and heartfelt benevolence”. The overture concludes with some of Wagner’s most inspired writing – an interweaving of the themes to create a very grand and glorious ending, making this one of Wagner’s most beloved overtures in the concert hall.

Kabalevsky: Cello Concerto No.1 in G minor
A contemporary of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, the young Kabalevsky navigated the political minefield facing composers in Russia at that time to produce his first cello concerto in 1948. This energetic and lively concerto contains much lyrical melody, virtuosic display and a triumphantly optimistic conclusion!

Dvorak - Symphony No.8
It has been said in respect to the opening trumpet fanfare, that “in Bohemia, the trumpets never call to battle—they always call to the dance”. And indeed, this well-loved symphony is full of Czech folk tunes and dances. A half hour of joyful music which never fails to delight audiences and orchestras alike.
